Question 1

What is an extra firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

An extra firm mattress is the hardest comfort level available, usually rated around a 9 or 10 on the firmness scale. It has minimal cushioning on top so the sleeper rests on the surface with very little sink. Extra firm mattresses are typically built with dense foam or heavy-gauge coils and thin comfort layers, which makes them feel solid and highly supportive.

Question 2

What is the difference between a firm mattress and an extra firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

A firm mattress still includes a modest comfort layer that softens the surface slightly, while an extra firm mattress strips that cushioning down to a minimum. In practice, a firm mattress feels supportive with a little give, and an extra firm mattress feels flat and hard. Most people who want a supportive bed are happy with firm, so extra firm is best reserved for those who specifically prefer a very hard surface.

Question 3

Who should sleep on an extra firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

Extra firm mattresses suit stomach sleepers, heavier individuals, and anyone who feels most comfortable on a very hard surface. The lack of sink keeps the hips level with the shoulders, which is especially helpful for stomach sleepers who might otherwise arch their lower back. Side sleepers and lighter people usually find an extra firm mattress creates pressure points, so a firm or medium firm mattress is often a better match.

Question 4

Is an extra firm mattress good for back pain?

Accepted Answer

An extra firm mattress can feel good to some people with back discomfort, particularly stomach and back sleepers who benefit from a flat, supportive surface. However, a mattress that is too hard can also increase pressure on the hips and shoulders and leave the lower back unsupported. Many people do better on a firm or medium firm mattress, so it is worth comparing several comfort levels before settling on extra firm.

Question 5

Can I make an extra firm mattress feel softer?

Accepted Answer

Yes, adding a mattress topper is the simplest way to soften an extra firm mattress without giving up the support underneath. A memory foam or latex topper adds a few inches of cushioning that relieves pressure at the shoulders and hips. This approach works well for couples where one partner prefers a hard bed, and Mattress Warehouse carries toppers in a range of thicknesses to adjust the feel.
