Question 1

What size are crib sheets?

Accepted Answer

Standard crib sheets are made to fit a full-size crib mattress, which measures about 28 by 52 inches, and usually accommodate a mattress up to about 6 inches thick. Because federal standards keep full-size crib mattresses consistent, most standard crib sheets fit most standard cribs. Mini cribs, bassinets, and portable cribs use smaller mattresses and need sheets sized specifically for them.

Question 2

What is the best material for crib sheets?

Accepted Answer

Soft, breathable cotton is the most popular choice for crib sheets, with jersey knit, percale, and muslin all being common options. Jersey feels stretchy and soft like a T-shirt, percale is crisp and cool, and muslin gets softer with each wash. Organic cotton crib sheets are a good option for parents who want fabric made without harsh chemicals, and all of these choices hold up well to frequent laundering.

Question 3

How many crib sheets do I need?

Accepted Answer

Most parents find that three to four crib sheets is a comfortable number, since diaper leaks and spit-up mean frequent changes. Having a spare sheet ready makes middle-of-the-night swaps quicker, and a waterproof crib mattress pad underneath adds another layer of protection. Rotating a few sets also extends the life of each sheet.

Question 4

Are fitted crib sheets the only safe bedding for a crib?

Accepted Answer

Safe sleep guidelines call for a firm crib mattress covered with only a snug-fitting fitted sheet, with no loose blankets, pillows, bumpers, or stuffed toys in the crib. Wearable blankets or sleep sacks are the recommended way to keep a baby warm. A fitted crib sheet should hug the mattress tightly and never pull loose at the corners.

Question 5

Do crib sheets fit toddler beds?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most toddler beds use the same size mattress as a full-size crib, so standard crib sheets typically fit a toddler bed as well. This makes the transition easier because the same sheets and mattress can move from the crib to the toddler bed. Mattress Warehouse carries crib mattresses and sheets that work through both stages, which helps families get more use out of the nursery bedding they already own.
