What Your Sleeping Style Says About You

Most people have a nightly sleep routine: crawling into the same side of the bed, pulling up the sheets, and falling asleep in the same position. The three most common positions are on your back, on your side, and on your stomach. Some body language experts, like Robert Phipps, believe that your sleeping position can reveal personality and character traits. Read on to see what Phipps' studies say about each position.

Stomach Sleeping Position

Phipps finds that stomach sleepers are more likely to feel anxious or worried about life. Called "Freefallers," they may feel like life is happening around them, with little control over their tasks. They also tend to be the most outgoing group. Phipps recommends that Freefallers take baby steps: focus on one thing at a time and gain confidence in being in charge.

Sleeping on your stomach can cause long-term neck strain due to the unnatural breathing position. At Mattress Warehouse, we offer pillows designed to support stomach sleepers and improve breathing. Check out these pillows from BEDGEAR.

Back Sleeping Position

Sleeping on your back can reflect your personality. Back sleepers often take charge, are hardworking, and tend toward perfectionism, though they may also be bossy or stubborn. Hand position matters: sleepers who elevate their hands above their heads tend to be caring, good friends, and great listeners, while those who keep arms at their sides are more subdued.

Back sleepers need a low-profile pillow for proper alignment. Check out the selection at Mattress Warehouse to support your sleep style and start resting better.

Side Sleeping Position

Over 58% of people sleep on their side, making it the most common position. Side sleepers include "Log" sleepers, "Yearners," and fetal position sleepers, with fetal being the most popular. Women tend to sleep in the fetal position twice as often as men. Phipps notes that fetal sleepers may be worriers who appear tough externally but have a sensitive heart. Other traits include being warm, conscientious, and open-minded.

"Log" sleepers sleep in a straight line and are easygoing, friendly, but sometimes gullible. "Yearners" sleep on their side with arms stretched forward, showing joyfulness and eagerness but also cynicism and stubbornness. Are you a side sleeper?
