What is a Platform Bed?

Just like there are different mattresses for different people, there are also different types of beds. Some beds are simple metal frames — which may or may not include a headboard — that hold box springs and a mattress. Other beds may be slightly fancier but still rely on a similar setup. Platform beds, however, can completely transform your bedroom.

Platform beds offer many options, including additional storage space. But what exactly is a platform bed, and how do you know if it’s the right choice for you?

What is a Platform Bed Frame?

Many traditional bed frames are low metal structures that hold a box spring and mattress. A platform bed does not require a metal frame. There are several types, including solid, slatted, and metal platform beds.

A solid platform bed typically uses a flat, hard surface — such as a Bunkie board — while a metal platform bed features a single piece with metal bars supporting the mattress.

The most common platform bed type uses slats that run from the head to the foot of the bed. These wooden slats can be bound together or laid separately across the bed frame. Properly installed slats provide sufficient support, eliminating the need for a box spring.

Note: Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines to avoid voiding your mattress warranty.

Benefits of Platform Beds

Platform beds offer several benefits, including helping you feng shui your bedroom and eliminating the need for box springs.

One major advantage is additional storage. Some solid platform beds have built-in drawers under the mattress, while metal or slatted beds allow you to store items in flat totes that slide easily underneath.

What Kind of Mattress is Best for a Platform Bed?

Most mattresses work with platform beds, but memory foam mattresses — such as Tempur-Pedic, Casper, Nectar, or SomosBeds — may be ideal.

Memory foam is generally lighter than traditional coiled mattresses, placing less stress on platform slats. Weight is less of an issue for solid or metal platforms.
