What are the Best Sheets for Your Mattress?

What are the Best Sheets for Your Mattress?

After buying a new mattress, thoughts usually turn to what type of sheets should you get and what are the best sheets for your new mattress? The answer really comes down to preference, but there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for the best bed sheets.

Lots of misconceptions have been shown to people for so long that, even though the information isn’t accurate, people believe it to be true. The higher the thread count, the better the sheets feel, right? Right? Always look for Egyptian cotton for the best night’s sleep, right? Again, right? It’s time to separate fact from fiction so you can pick out the best sheets for you.

What Makes Up the Best Sheets?

There are so many different types of sheets available now – everything from cotton to cooling. Picking the best sheets boils down to personal tastes. A couple of things to keep in mind, though:

  • High quality equals soft: When it comes to cotton sheets, the highest quality, softest sheets use extra-long fibers (called long-staple fibers) that are spun into fine, strong yarns. You’ll usually find long-staple cotton in Egyptian and Pima sheets. Still, sheets can be made with non-certified cotton and still be considered very comfortable.
  • Microfiber or cotton? Microfiber sheets are usually more affordable than cotton sheets. They’re soft and resist pilling more than typical polyester fabric. The downside is it’s less breathable than cotton and can retain heat. Cotton tends to stay a bit cooler as the night goes on.
  • Weaves make a difference: Most times you won’t even notice the type of weave labeled on the packaging, but the type of weave can give you some of the best sheets available. A sateen weave produces a soft, lustrous feel, but is less durable. Percale is a durable plain weave with a thread count of at least 180. Combed cotton has been combed to remove short fibers leaving the longer fibers, which makes for a strong, soft fabric.

Does Thread Count Really Matter?

If you’re the type of person who absolutely swears by nothing less than 1,000-thread sheets, this next part is for you.

Believe it or not, it’s the type of thread that makes the difference, not the count. A sheet of a better-quality fiber with a lower thread count will feel softer and stand up to washing better than a sheet of a lower-quality fiber with a higher thread count.

When you see counts above 300 for percale or 600 for sateen, that sometimes means the manufacturers are using ply — the number of single threads twisted together in yarn — to artificially inflate the thread count, namely counting two-ply yarns as two yarns instead of one. That means a 500-thread-count sheet made with two-ply yarns might be advertised as 1,000 thread count.

What are Deep Pocket Fitted Sheets?

Have you ever bought fitted sheets and the corners keep popping up every night? You’re not alone. Some mattresses, such as pillowtops and those with mattress toppers, add thickness. Many mattress sets are made specifically for shorter mattresses, hence the reason why you can never keep the fitted sheet properly tucked.

Deep pocket fitted sheets actually give you what you’re looking for – a fitted sheet that stays where it’s supposed to during the night. Deep pocket fitted sheets are usually between 13 and 17 inches and extra-deep pocket sheets could give you 18 to 25 inches. Be careful, though, as you want to make sure the pockets aren’t too deep, otherwise you’ll need to tuck in the excess.
